The margin of safety connection
Intrinsic value estimates are always uncertain. The margin of safety — buying at a meaningful discount to estimated intrinsic value — provides protection against errors in your assumptions. If you estimate intrinsic value at $100 and buy at $70, you have a 30% margin of safety. Even if you're somewhat wrong about the business's prospects, you may still earn an acceptable return.
The required margin of safety should be larger for: more uncertain businesses, earlier-stage companies with less financial history, more cyclical businesses whose earnings are harder to normalize, and businesses in rapidly changing industries.
