Long-Term Investment Thesis
Write why you own it — and what would prove you wrong
This is the tool version of step 7 on How to Research a Stock and section 7 on the checklist. You can do that step in a notebook. Framework 05 is for when you want the same demand — a testable claim — run against live filings and news.
When to run it
- After you can explain the business (Framework 01) and you have at least one honest bear case (Framework 02) or a view on what the price assumes (Framework 03).
- When you already own the name and cannot remember why.
- When you are about to add to a winner and need the invalidator in writing before the next dip.
Do not run Framework 05 first. A thesis with no business description is a slogan.
What the write-up is supposed to contain
A Framework 05 output should give you:
- One paragraph thesis: the business, the reason the current price is wrong or fair enough, the horizon (years, not a week)
- The two or three supports that actually have to stay true
- One hard invalidator — a sentence that means you were wrong
- What you will do if that sentence comes true (re-underwrite, cut, sell). Decided now.
- What you will ignore (a red week, a competitor keynote, a single noisy quarter)
If the output is "attractive long-term compounder" with no kill switch, the run failed. Write the invalidator yourself and run it again.
What this framework cannot do
- It does not value the stock. That is Framework 03 (Fair Value Stress Test).
- It does not check whether earnings are cash. That is Framework 04 (Earnings Quality Analyzer).
- It does not tell you how many shares to buy. That is Framework 06 (Portfolio Risk & Fit).
- It does not grade management or read Form 4s.
- It is not a buy or sell rating.

Notes a first thesis pass should produce — not a finished model
- Thesis draft: own a piece of a commerce + cloud + ads bundle only if AWS stays a healthy growth engine and ads keep earning on the store's traffic. Horizon is years.
- Supports that have to stay true: AWS still growing for real, not just capex headlines; ads still attached to purchase intent; the store not becoming the whole story again at 1% margins.
- Hard invalidator draft: AWS growth goes negative, or stays weak while spending does not come down, and ads slow with it.
- If that sentence becomes true: do not "wait for the brand." Re-underwrite or sell.
- Ignore: a single retail quarter, a cloud-competitor keynote, a down week in the ticker.
Still open after a 05: a price range I would actually add against, two years of cash vs earnings side by side, and a max position size. Those are 03, 04, and 06.

Do it yourself, then run 05
Before you spend a credit:
- Finish checklist sections 1–3, or admit you have not.
- Write section 7 on paper: one paragraph + one kill-switch sentence.
- Cover the ticker. Read those two lines out loud. If they sound like a slogan, they are a slogan.
Then run Framework 05 and see whether the filings force a sharper invalidator than the one you wrote.
Common questions
Can I skip 01 and 03 and just run the thesis?
You can. You will get a paragraph that sounds finished and is not. Write the business and the "price assumes X" sentence first.
What if I cannot think of an invalidator?
Then you are not ready to own it. "It could go down" is not an invalidator. Name the business condition that ends the argument.
What do I run next?
Framework 06 if the thesis is written and the live question is size. Otherwise stop. Do not run the other ten to postpone writing the sentence.
Run Long-Term Investment Thesis
Same demand as checklist section 7. Live filings and news instead of a blank page. This is the optional faster pass — not a substitute for a sentence you can say out loud.
